Small Nursery Design – Bold Wallpaper

Small nursery design can be daunting.  You want it to look and feel bigger, and often the thought is to go with subtle, calm colors to make it feel airy and bright.  This is one way to go…but you can also do the opposite.  Bright, bold wallpaper can make a small nursery feel larger.  It creates focus and dimension.  Here are a couple of great examples from Pinterest.

Land of Nod Storage – Stepping it up!

Have you taken a gander at Land of Nod and in particular their storage solutions lately?  They have always been a bit “ho-hum” in my mind – perfectly nice, but usually a bit on the boring side.  Great for staples, but not that stylish.  Well, I’m loving their new storage – in particular their great shelf & wall storage and organization.  There are great colors, great shapes, shelves, hooks and more.  When organizing a small room, getting things up off the floor is a great way to make use of all the space.

Here are some of my favorites.

Folding Rocking Horse

Young kids love to move their bodies and get energy out.  One of the classic toys of all time is the rocking horse.  But do you really have the space?  And do you really want to look at it all the time? Enter the company HooHobbers.  They sell a folding rocking horse which is sure to please both child and parent.

It is a small horse – 22″ x 12″ x 29″ (HxWxD) and only weighs 5lbs, yet it can hold up to 75lbs of weight.  It has a soft head, a solid frame, handles and foot rests.  It comes in three colors, and can be purchased for $49 on their website.

But, the best feature (especially in CityBaby Living terms) is that it can fold up when not in use to only 4 inches high! Now that really ROCKS! (sorry, I couldn’t help myself)

Nursery Organization Tips – Diapers

The key to good nursery organization, especially in a small nursery is to have specific places for things, and to keep a system going.  Diapers are no exception.

We used these Ikea SKUBB boxes in the top drawer of the dresser where we changed Peep.  That way, I could keep a hand on her, dig into the drawer and get the diapers, wipes, creme, etc I needed with the other hand.  They’re collapsible and at $7.99, you can’t go wrong.

If you have room next to your changing area, I suggest getting a storage system/diaper caddy that can keep a manageable number of diapers, wipes, etc. like this adorable caddy from The Storage Loft on Etsy.

If you don’t have room on a shelf, look at other places in the nursery that you can keep some diapers out and about.  This grey wool caddy comes from BabiesBreath on Etsy. I love itbecause it can hang anywhere – crib, wall, back of a chair, etc., and it’s so stylish.

It seems these days, you can’t talk about nursery organization without including 3 Sprouts in the mix.  And they are well worth the mentions.  This wall organizer is great for diapers, or whatever and will grow with you and your organizing needs.

Growth Charts

I was a lucky kid in many, many ways.  One great thing about my childhood was that I lived in the same old farmhouse for 20 years.  My parents never planned on moving, so they went ahead and made our growth chart on the inside door of the pantry. (Also, that’s what you did then!)  As we got older, we added friends and additional family to the door and it was truly a piece of our family history.  Well, you know it’s coming…we moved, and left the door and that history behind. (Cue my mom’s tears as she’s reading this.)

Fast forward to today.  I do not plan on living in this apartment for 20 years plus, nor do I suspect do many of you.  I want to have a growth chart that I can take with me when I move; to can keep and share that piece of my family history.

I chose Peep’s from one of my favorite companies – eeBoo.  They have a lovely aesthetic with a very whimsical design sense that screams childhood, but not in an icky way. Each of their growth charts can fold into sturdy paper keepsake boxes and are laminated for sturdiness. They also come with stickers for noting special events, like birthdays and holidays although we have not taken advantage of them.

Here are a few other great options.  You’ll note that a couple of them come from Etsy – a fabulous place to look for things like this.

Hot Air Balloon Growth ChartI love this Hot Air Balloon from LilBitDesign on Etsy.  There is something so poignant about a hot air balloon going up and up as you track your child’s growth.  There are many great designs from this store.

Growth Chart Numbers - Children's Vinyl Wall Decal

Another great Etsy shop is SimpleShapes. They have a couple of different wall decal options which are great.  I love this bold decal that can comes in 31 different colors!

This is from Land of Nod and is a mirror.  Design wise, I think it’s really great, but I’m not sure if it’s a practical way to record your child’s height.

There are so many options out there…these are just a few to get you started!  Do you have a favorite I missed?

Babyhome Dream Cot Review

I was introduced to the company Babyhome at Magic Bean’s Drool Expo a few months back.  Started in 2005, they aim to bring baby products to parents with a fresh and functional design.  And they do.  They make a variety of products (stroller, high chair, seat, etc) but I particularly liked their Dream cot.

It’s compact – 28.13 x 32.75 x 21.13 (HxWxL) and only 13.2lbs and can be folded to be put away. But the best feature is the innovative adjustable leg system which with a simple click can make it go from being stationary to be a rocker to then be on wheels.  It comes in a rainbow of fabulous modern colors and the fabric can be removed from the aluminum frame for washing.   We used our Bugaboo Cameleon as a bassinet for Peep, but if you don’t have a stoller like that, this is a fabulous bassinet for a small baby.

It retails for $299 and can be found at multiple online retailers as well as a number of top baby stores  – look for one near you!

Happy 4th of July (a bit late)

We braved the crowds (and the early rain) to go gaze at the tall ships in Boston Harbor and happened to find an isolated and people free look-out.  We didn’t last long after this picture and left the crowds to have low-key fun with friends for the rest of the day.

What did you do???

The Kidco Go-Pod – Foldable, Portable Activity Seat

I like products that are light-weight, portable, easy to store, and that you don’t have to look at ALL THE TIME.  This does not apply to most toddler activity seats.  But with the Kidco Go-Pod, it does.

This activity seat doesn’t come with a lot of bells & whistles, but it is your basic seat and you can add what you’re baby is interested in.  The age range they recommend is approximately 4 months to walking and it has 4 seat height positions to grow with your child.

Additional Features:

  • Locking Button – Ensures Go·Pod is locked in place; safe for baby
  • Floor Pad – Keeps baby’s feet from touching undesirable surfaces
  • Drink and Snack Holders
  • Five Nylon Toy Loops – Holds baby’s favorite toys
  • Storage Bag – Includes pocket for wallet, keys, ipod, etc.
  • Total Weight: 7 lbs
  • Folded Dimensions: 6.5” x 6.5” x 29.5” (WxLxH)
  • Open Dimensions: 24” x 24” x 19.5” (WxLxH) at its lowest seat level
  • 3 color choices – Quick Silver, Sorbet and Pistachio (note: these flavor names don’t seem to accurately represent what you’re getting – the one above is Quick Silver – anyone want to mention something about yellow???)

My sister has one for her 10 month old (she’s been using it for months – this kid is very physical).  She loves that it can be folded when not in use and easily move-able from room to room or even outside.  She did not like that unless anchored, the toys fell into her daughter’s lap.

Overall, it’s a great activity seat for those in small spaces, or who want something they can easily move around.

Save Space – Put your Crib in a Closet

We live in a fairly old house so we were not blessed with very many closets. But, if I lived in a newer construction that had maybe just one closet to spare, I’d definitely choose to do something like this.  Or, if I was not blessed with a 2nd bedroom and needed to be super creative with where my child slept. From beds, to nooks, to changing stations, there is no limit to what you can do these days.

Tiny Office Space – Creative Solution

We have great friends who have 2 young boys in a small 2 bedroom. Prior to having the boys, they had plenty of space for their home office – afterwards, not so much.  Luckily, they did have a pantry…and vision.

The built in’s along the wall include a file cabinet and supplies on the left, and additional pantry space on the right.

CityBaby Living at it’s best.
